I am an Executive Woman…Hear Me…Whisper?

As an executive leader do you find yourself shrinking to make others comfortable? Have you tried to minimize your talents or success because it made others feel better?

I had a recent conversation with a friend and asked if she had any bold professional goals. She shared that she set her intention to step into her full confidence. So exciting! 

She also felt that as part of this journey she needed to prepare for the ‘consequences’ of doing so. I asked her to share more about the ‘consequences’ that she anticipated. I learned they were centered around how her confidence would make others feel.

I asked her to consider reframing her thinking a bit. Her desire to operate consistently with full confidence didn’t have to come with consequences. How others choose to feel is their responsibility, not hers. She shouldn’t take that on. 

If those around you aren’t 100% supportive it’s usually a reflection of how they feel about themselves and has nothing to do with you. When you diminish your strengths based on the insecurities of others you relinquish your power to the things that are holding them back – which in turn holds you back.

Is there an area in your life where you’re retreating from your strengths because you’re concerned how others will feel?

Yes?

Well, congratulations on taking the first step to reclaiming your power!

  • Arm yourself with this new awareness and redirect. When you recognize you are putting the needs of others before yours, remember your commitment to yourself and step back into your power.
  • Identify ways to stay on track. Choose a tactic to put into practice. Maybe you need an accountability partner to help get you back on course or perhaps you can write yourself a love note as a reminder.
  • Reflect on your feelings. Pay attention to how you feel. Embrace any discomfort as evidence of growth.
