At the end of January, I saw a funny social media post that asked, “Did you accomplish your goals in January?”
What followed was a gif of Whitney Houston, in her melodic voice, singing an excerpt from ‘The Bodyguard’.
🎶 I have nothing, nothing, nothinnnggg!” 🎶
So funny and so true for some of us.
The new year creates a great jump-off point for reaching our goals. But considering the past two years, our new year feels like the continuation of the difficult year before.
But, don’t get discouraged. Each day gives you another chance to start again.
Ready to reboot? Get anchored to your ‘why’.
One of my goals this year is to focus on wellness. While it would be nice to fit the clothes in my closet again (thanks, pandemic), my true ‘why’ is that diabetes runs in my family, and I have to do my part to avoid it.
Getting anchored to your ‘why’ helps you do things you may not be eager to do, like go to work in the morning or exercise.
Your ‘why’ is the intrinsic motivator that enables you to push through resistance to get closer to your goals.
If you aren’t clear on your ‘why’, try this exercise.
First, state what your goal is.
I want to find a new job.
Then ask yourself ‘why’ 5 times.
Why? I’m unhappy at work.
Why? I’m exhausted all the time.
Why? I don’t enjoy what I’m doing.
Why? I feel like I can’t be myself at work.
Why? My values don’t align with the company.
You’ll notice that the ‘why’ is rooted in values alignment rather than just the goal of finding a new job.
So let’s reset and relaunch this month!
Get connected to your ‘why’ and let’s go crush some goals!
What’s the ‘why’ behind your New Year’s goals? Comment and let me know.
